Online Therapy Teen Counselling Services

Meeting with one of our therapists online is a great option for some teens and families because it’s convenient, accessible, and as research shows for many people, as effective as in-person therapy. If you’re considering therapy for your teen, you may have a sense as to if in-person or online would be the right fit. You may also have a conversation with your teen about the options and ask what they think would be best for them. Based on our experience at the centre, online therapy might be the right fit for your teen if:

      • You live anywhere in Ontario and commuting to one of our two locations just isn’t possible. We know it can be difficult to find specialized mental health services for teens and their families in small or remote communities. Our expert therapists want to support teens all across Ontario and online therapy allows them to do just that.
      • Your family navigates a really busy schedule and removing the need for a commute and travel time helps make consistently attending therapy more possible.
      • Your teen prefers to do therapy from the comfort of their own home. Some people feel more comfortable in their own space, which in turn allows them to be more present, open, and engaged during therapy. Our therapists think it’s pretty great when we get to see some pet snuggles during a session!
      • Your teen has been meeting with one of our therapists in person, is now moving out of Toronto (e.g., for post-secondary school), and wants to maintain the relationship with their therapist. Big moves like this involve a lot of change and uncertainty, and being able to stay connected with a trusted and familiar therapist can be a major source of support during such a transition.

For those who prefer and can make it to in-person appointments, online therapy is still available for the times when coming into the office just isn’t practical. Whether your teen is feeling under the weather, you’re navigating a tight schedule, or dealing with winter weather, switching to an online appointment allows your teen to maintain continuity and still connect with their therapist.

What You'll Need

Practically, all you’ll need for online therapy is access to a private location, a working computer, tablet, or phone, and a strong internet connection. Ear buds, headphones, or a headset with a microphone are recommended. The therapists at TCCFT use a private, secure PHIPA-compliant platform for all video sessions to safeguard your personal information.

Some Things to Know About Online Therapy Counselling for Teens...

Online counselling for teenegers in Ontario
  • For our online video sessions, we are using a program called Janeapp telehealth. It is HIPAA, PHIPA, and PIPEDA compliant. All that to say, it is safe and secure.
  • We will store your credit card information in Janeapp (our booking and charting software program) which is secure. The card will be charged at the end of the session.
  • Our policies for charging for late or missed sessions are the same for both in person and online clients. We ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancelled sessions. Cancelled within the 24 hour window, it’s 50% of the fee and missed altogether is 100% of the fee.
  • If you are in Ontario, we are happy to work with you. We’re not regulated to work outside of Ontario.
  • If you live outside of the city of Toronto, we will need local emergency contacts for you. This is not 911 as that will lead us only to our local response options. We’ll need the local numbers for your police, paramedics and firefighters.
  • We can’t accept new clients online who are suicidal or a potential harm to themselves or others. If this comes up through the course of therapy, it is our policy to inform parents if their teen is suicidal, or a potential harm to themselves or others. In these cases, we will continue to work with your teen but you will also need to find your teen a local therapist or medical professional to help with the immediate risk and concern for your teen and their safety.

How Does Online Therapy Counselling Differ from In-Person Counselling?

Online therapy for teens is the same as in-person therapy, only it’s conducted digitally. Virtual counselling services partner with trusted online platforms to provide safe, confidential access to online counselling for teens. You schedule a meeting for a time when you have a private space and can speak comfortably.

Virtual therapy for teens involves clicking a link and joining the meeting. From there, virtual counselling sessions proceed according to whether it’s an online family counselling session or virtual therapy for teens.
