How to Care for Your Mood: Coping with Seasonal Mood Shifts

How to Care for Your Mood This Fall and Winter

Posted by on November 17, 2025

Undoubtedly, fall is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. The leaves are changing colors, our wardrobes are filling with cozy sweaters, and the scent of pumpkin spice is in the air. We’ve officially entered the season of warm drinks, comfort foods, and colorful autumn days, with a bit of early snow forecasted.

But with every beautiful season comes its challenges. For many of us, the fall and winter months can affect our mood. Do you ever notice feeling more tired, wanting to stay inside, or feeling easily irritated, anxious, or down? You’re not alone. As the days grow shorter and we get less sunlight, our energy and emotions can shift, sometimes more than we realize.

How to Care for Your Mood With the Help of Your Therapist

Research shows that when sunlight decreases during the fall and winter months, it can affect our body’s internal clock, the system that helps regulate our mood, energy, and sleep. With less daylight, our brain produces lower levels of serotonin, a chemical that helps us feel calm and balanced, and melatonin, the hormone that controls our sleep and wake cycles. These changes can make us feel more tired, unmotivated, or even sad. It’s our body’s natural response to getting less light, but it can have a real impact on how we feel day to day.

In other words, it’s completely normal to feel this way during the colder months. So, what can we do to prepare and take care of ourselves over the next few months? One helpful approach is to create some balance. Start by getting your body moving. Whether it’s a walk, a quick stretch, or a full workout, movement helps release endorphins, chemicals that boost your mood and ease stress. Try to build a simple routine of moving each day, and when you can, spend time outside. Even a few minutes of fresh air and sunlight can make a big difference.

Second, stay connected with friends and family. Set aside intentional time each month to reach out and spend time with the people who make you feel supported. Plan activities you can look forward to, and try not to cancel plans just because your mood dips. Sometimes showing up, even when you don’t fully feel like it, can help lift your spirits. And don’t forget to check in on others too. A simple text or call to ask how someone’s doing can go a long way, for both of you.

Lastly, make the most of the sunlight whenever you can. Open your blinds, sit near a bright window, or step outside when it’s sunny, even a little bit of daylight can boost your mood. Use this season as an opportunity to revisit hobbies you’ve put off, try something creative, or enjoy your favorite comfort foods and drinks. Small moments of light and warmth can make a big difference during the darker months.

Our mood affects how we feel, think, and behave, and it’s okay to need extra support during certain seasons. If you notice your mood worsening or daily life starting to feel harder, reach out to your therapist. Talk openly about what you’re experiencing and explore coping strategies that work best for you. You don’t have to go through it alone, support is available and can make a real difference.

Remember, the seasons always change, and brighter days are just around the corner.
