Therapy for Neurodivergent Teens

Every teen experiences the world in their own unique way. For neurodivergent teens, their brain processes information, emotions and the world in ways that may differ from what’s considered “typical.” Neurodivergent teens bring so many unique strengths to the world: creativity, deep focus, high levels of empathy and compassion, and fresh creative ways of thinking. They can also experience the world and daily challenges of being a teen in a way that sometimes feels overwhelming, misunderstood, or exhausting.

Many neurodivergent teens spend a lot of energy trying to keep up or fit in. It can be draining. Individual counselling for teens offers a different experience – a place where they can take the pressure off, be themselves, feel understood and build confidence in who they are.

How to know if your teen might need support

It’s not always obvious when a teen could benefit from therapy – especially if they’ve been “getting by” for a long time. You might notice:

  • They feel easily overwhelmed, frustrated, or shut down
  • Their schoolwork feels like a constant struggle, even when they’re capable and trying hard
  • Big emotions seem hard to manage
  • Social situations seem confusing or draining
  • They’re often masking how much they’re struggling but give glimpses of their pain
  • Their self-talk is negative, self-esteem is low or they’re really hard on themselves

For some teens, these struggles may show up alongside anxiety, low mood, or difficulty managing attention and follow-through. When that is the case, support such as anxiety therapy for teensdepression therapy for teens, or ADHD therapy for teens may also be helpful depending on what your teen is experiencing.

What to expect from neurodivergent therapy

Our therapists take a collaborative and strengths-based approach. We create a space where teens can feel seen, accepted, and supported just as they are. Sessions are uniquely tailored to each individual teen’s needs, pace, and personality. Depending on your teen, therapy may include:

  • Building self-understanding and acceptance
  • Learning practical tools for organization, focusing attention, and follow-through
  • Developing emotion regulation skills, including daily ways of taking care as well as strategies for managing more intense emotional distress
  • Navigating friendships and social dynamics with confidence, authenticity, and empathy
  • Identifying and setting healthy boundaries in relationships
  • Identifying triggers for emotion dysregulation or burnout and exploring creative ways to manage and cope with triggers

In therapy, we focus on helping neurodivergent teens better understand themselves, build skills that work for their brain, and navigate life with more confidence. Our therapists are not able to provide psychological diagnoses, but if that’s something you’re curious about, we’re happy to provide information and walk alongside your teen and family through that process.

Parents may also benefit from guidance when they are trying to understand their teen’s needs, reduce conflict at home, or respond with more confidence. In these situations, individual parent counselling or family counselling can provide additional support for the whole family system.

If you’re wondering whether therapy could help your teen, we welcome you to reach out to book a consultation. We’re happy to talk through what’s going on for your teen and see if we feel like the right fit for your teen and family.
