Therapy for Teens Navigating Divorce, Separation, or Blended Families

Family changes such as divorce, separation, or blending families can be unsettling, hard to accept, and difficult to navigate for each family member. These changes and the uncertainty that come with them can feel especially tough and overwhelming for children and teens. Teens often find themselves holding a real mix of emotions – confusion, sadness, anger, grief, worry, relief, or uncertainty about where they fit and what comes next. While healing through family changes often happens within the family, having a steady, supportive person outside of the family to talk to can make a meaningful difference.

How Family Changes Can Affect Teens

Each family situation is so incredibly unique and there is no “normal” way to process and respond to family transitions. While every teen responds differently, some common experiences that may indicate a need for more support include:

  • Increased anxiety, sadness, anger or irritability
  • Withdrawal from family or friends
  • Changes in school motivation or performance
  • Taking on roles and responsibilities in an attempt to manage family distress, such as trying to be a peacemaker, mediator, or protector
  • Feeling caught in the middle between parents
  • Resentment or discomfort in blended family dynamics

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a consistent and warm space for teens to process what they’re going through. For teens going through big family changes, having a neutral, non-judgmental and caring person outside of their inner circle can be really valuable. Our therapists take a family and attachment-based approach, which focuses on helping teens feel safe, understood, and securely connected to their people. We value establishing a safe, trusting relationship between the teen and their therapist while supporting them in navigating the family changes.

In therapy, we support teens to:

  • Explore and make sense of their thoughts and feelings
  • Build emotion regulation skills to help navigate their emotions and reactions
  • Feel more grounded and secure while navigating uncertainty and changing family relationships
  • Develop strong communication skills so they can express themselves more confidently
  • Identify their strengths, values and social supports
  • Adapt to new routines or expectations
  • Help strengthen meaningful connection to the people, places, and things that support them hard times
